A transparent UV rod can refer to two distinct types of industrial and scientific materials depending on whether the requirement is to transmit/guide ultraviolet light or to fluoresce/react under it.
UV-Transmitting Rods (Fused Quartz / Silica)
If the goal is to pass UV light through a rod without absorption, ordinary glass cannot be used because its iron and metal oxide impurities absorb nearly all UVB and UVC rays. Instead, high-purity fused quartz glass rods are utilized.
- Material Composition: Amorphous, pure silicon dioxide (SiO₂) with a purity rating of 99.95% to 99.999%.
- UV Light Performance: Provides optical transmittance exceeding 80% across the UV spectrum (including deep germicidal UV-C wavelengths down to 185 nm).
- Core Differentiators: Exceptional temperature resistance (working temperatures up to 1100°C), chemical inertness, and a low coefficient of thermal expansion to survive thermal shock.
- Primary Uses: Light guides in UV-C disinfection devices, photochemical reaction cells, laser optics, and water treatment systems.
