Properties and structure
Ti3AlC2cap T i elongs to the family of MAX phases, a class of layered ternary carbides and nitrides. Its unique properties stem from its hexagonal crystal structure, which features alternating layers of titanium carbide and pure aluminum.
Mechanical and thermal properties
- High-temperature strength: Exhibits high strength and stability at elevated temperatures.
- Machinability: Unlike traditional ceramics, it can be machined at room temperature and shows some ductility.
- Damage tolerance: The layered structure allows for the formation of kink bands that dissipate energy, contributing to excellent damage and thermal shock resistance.
- Oxidation resistance: Forms a protective alumina layer when exposed to high temperatures in air.
