A geological hammer (also known as a rock pick, geopick, or rock hammer) is a highly specialized tool designed for field geologists, paleontologists, and mining professionals. Unlike standard carpentry hammers, it is engineered from hardened, high-grade steel to withstand striking hard rock surfaces without chipping or fracturing.
A professional geological hammer serves three main functions in the field: exposure, extraction, and trimming. It features a dual-headed design with a flat striking face on one side and a specialized diagnostic tip on the other.
- The Flat Face: Used for crushing matrix rock, driving chisels, and breaking off weathered outer layers to expose a “fresh surface” for accurate mineral identification.
- The Tail End (Pick or Chisel): Depending on the geology of the region, field workers choose between a pointed tip (for fracturing hard igneous/metamorphic rocks and extracting crystals) or a chisel edge (for splitting layered sedimentary rocks and uncovering fossils).
